Revised Lectionary – Reminder for Psalmists/Cantors Thursday, Jun 18 2009

Reminder for Lectors and Psalmists (or Cantors)Lectionary

Since, as of Pentecost Sunday (May 30-31, 2009), we have a new revised Lectionary for Sundays and Solemnities in Canada, it is important that lectors and psalmists (or cantors) prepare the texts for their ministerial roles from this new source. This new revised Lectionary is now the only version officially approved by the Catholic Bishops of Canada (English sector), and authorized by the Holy See, for liturgical use by Catholics of the Roman Rite in Canada.

Both the Living with Christ and St. Joseph’s Missals already contain the readings (including responsorial psalms) of the new revised Lectionary for Sundays and Solemnities. Lectors and psalmists (or cantors) should be sure to consult either of these missals or the new approved version of the Lectionary when preparing to proclaim the readings and responsorial psalms each Sunday. Psalmists (or cantors) are to be sure they use the chanted versions (verses and refrains) of the responsorial psalms as they appear in the new revised Lectionary. Musical settings corresponding to the new revised translation are available in the Living with Christ missalette, and may also be purchased in book form (Year B) from Novalis (Title: “Psalms for the Liturgical Year B (with CD)“)

Please note that the wording of psalms currently found in the most commonly used hymnals may not correspond to the wording found in the new revised Lectionary and, on that basis, must not be used. A soft-cover study edition of the new revised Lectionary, for personal use, is available from the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops at a cost of $35.00 each (to purchase, click here). While the helpful preparatory notes contained in the 2008-09 Workbook for Lectors and Gospel Readers are still valuable, the texts of the readings themselves may now no longer be used.
